If you happen to have the Northstar 4.6 L engine, prepare to spend big bucks. These engines have a problem with head gaskets and do exactly what you describe when they go bad.
Best solution is a good used engine. Even the Cadillac dealerships don't like to repair these engines.
I had the same problem and I had to have a head gasket job thats the only way you can fix the problem.
the job cost me 2800 dollars and thats not from the dealer which wanted 4 to 6 thousand. The problem
is that your caddy need a special kit to fix it correctly or it will happen again. It has special torque
specs that not all mechanics have the proper tools for. I was told that is very expensive and that it is
the only way to fix the problem. I had the problem fixed in 06 and have not had any problem with it
