I have a 98 Windstar and it would die when pulling up to a stop sign, slowing when coming to a stop or making a slow turn. According to Ford recall 98E03 EMISSIONS RECALL some vehicles may stall during deceleration when coming to a stop, during slow speed parking maneuvers and/or coasting thru slow sweeping turns. This may be caused by the Powertrain Contro lModule (PCM) calibration dropping the rpms too quickly during deceleration. This involves reprograming the PCM. The revised calibration will allow the engine rpms to drop slowly during low speed maneuvers to reduce the possibility of a stall. Call your local FORD dealership (have your VIN handy) and have them check to see if this recall has been performed on your vehicle.

Idling rough and hesitating when accelerating

This sounds like the mass airflow sensor.

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar it has a very rough idle and when driviing it has a problem shifting and when it does it tries to run very fast. We thought it was a fuel problem we ran fuel injector cleaner...

It sounds to me like you have a vaccume leak. Look for disconected vacume hoses. Listen for a hissing / sucking sound in the engine compartment. Also Check that the big air intake tubes are all securly in place. If everyting seems OK , then I would suspect the mass air flow sensor is kaput.

I have a 2004 f-150 5.4 liter with 100,000 niles

When was the last tune-up?

Inspect few plugs for carbon ash (lean running) or wet (rich running).

Clean Mass Air Flow sensor with CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner

Change air filter

Change PCV valve (under $10 item)

Ran a tank of Chevron gas with LUCAS fuel system cleaner additive.

Inspect for vacuum leak.
Start from the brake booster (round metal drum) and work you way outward.

1998 WINDSTAR CSERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS ON

it's not likely a bad o2 sensor would cause it to run rough, but the catylitic converter, which is what the o2 sensor reads the flow of, would cause the car to idle and run rough. If you take it to an auto parts store to have a diagnostic test ran on it( most major parts stores will do this for free), thecodes it gets would help pin point it alot better.

Had a similar problem and it just ended up being the sensor for the EVAP controls.  Stupid I know but it fixed the rough idle. Error code was P1443. Worth a try.
