My windstar is having a problem with the RPM's rev ving too high when I shift from park to reverse or drive. It causes to car to **** whenever changing gears on the automatic transmission
I have a 1996 Ford Windstar GL with a 3.8L engine. I resently purchased this vehicle and have been working out the small kinks. What I can not get resolved is the idle whenever the air conditioning compressor is on and when I come to a stop, it sort of kicks(jolts) as it slows down. I hope I have given you enough to understand what is going on...Thank You! Brad H
My van also has the high rpm's when it starts up. If I wait, the RPM goes to 800 and it is not as difficult to shift into a gear. This is a temporary solution but hopefully someone smarter can resolve our problems here...I have a 1996 Ford Windstar GL with a 3.8L engine. transmission does not automatically shift into third, just revs like in nuetral. will engage if going down a hill and let off the gas than slowly giving gas. reverse very weaktransmission does not automatically shift into third, just revs like in nuetral. will engage if going down a hill and let off the gas than slowly giving gas. reverse very weak

I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztek, whenever we're at a stop and then have to accelerate the engine will rev but the car will not move. I have to put it in park and then back into drive before it will go. This was before and after we just had the Transmission rebuilt.I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztek, whenever we're at a stop and then have to accelerate the engine will rev but the car will not move. The first thing to check is that you have working brake lights. If they are not working then the solenoid that pulls the park pin back to unlock the shifter is not going to get power from the brake light circuit.
yes it could, should never allow your engine to rev up that high continuously during normal driving. Sounds like the tranny needs a new Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) causing it to shift incorrectly, or incorrect shift cable adjustment. A check engine code may help you identify the problem, they read it for free at Autozone.
The computer can't sense movement. An engine with worn spark plugs or bad coils can run perfectly fine at idle and begin misfire the second you put it into gear or under loads. Plugs/coils misfire most when under load. Have you checked them?
Has the transmission ever had any services done? Its possible it has just gone out. There are clutches and bands inside and without proper service they will go out.
Check for vacuum lines going to transmission or any vacuum line under hood. It is possible an animal chewed on the lines or wires. We get a few reports of that at Fixya.
You might also look under the dash by the pedals for a vacuum leak. There are vacuum switches for parking brake release and the neutral start switch.
