1997 Cirrus is still overheating... The heater does not blow out hot air...would the heater core cause the vehicle to overheat? if not, what other problems am I looking for, I was loosing anti freeze at an alarming rate but it seems to have stopped. If the problem is with the thermostat, where is it and how do i change it?

Check if bubbles appear in the radiator of your vehicle when you rev up the engine. if yes then your vehicle has a blown up head gasket and needs replacement of it from a qualified technician

The heater core may be leaking and this is the cause for the loss of fluid and no heat! Loss of the fliud causes overheating but just a plugged heater core should not unless your radiator is not fully clean and working correctly. The thermostat is located on the engine, just follow the upper radiator hose to the engine.
THERMOSTAT
REMOVAL
Drain cooling system to the thermostat level or below.
Remove coolant recovery system (CRS) hose and thermostat/engine outlet connector bolts Thermostat/Engine Outlet Connector - 2.0L Engine and Thermostat and Engine Outlet Connector - 2.4L Engine 2.0/2.4L Engines. 2.5L engine remove inlet hose and coolant elbow from thermostat housing Thermostat, Housing and Inlet Elbow - 2.5L Engine
Remove thermostat assembly, and clean sealing surfaces.
INSTALLATION
Place the new thermostat assembly into the engine outlet connector. Align air bleed with notch on the cylinder head.
Install engine outlet connector onto cylinder head and tighten bolts to 12.5 N·m (110 in. lbs.) Connect the coolant recovery system (CRS) hose.
Fill cooling system. Refer to Refilling System outlined in this section.
INSTALLATION - 2.5L ENGINE
Install thermostat into the recess in the thermostat housing. Install inlet elbow and tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (133 in. lbs.) Thermostat, Housing and Inlet Elbow - 2.5L Engine

It appears that you have a large air pocket/low on coolant. The engine is getting hot due to the lack of coolant but there is no heat because nothing is flowing through the core.

2002 cavalier overheats but heater blows cold air

check your coolant level. if it is low you will not have heat and also causing the vehicle to run hot.

Changed thermostat and added coolant but 1997

could be waterpump?
i was going to say rad fan,but if so heater would be hot.
lack of coolant will make heater core to blow cold,if engine heats up with full coolant,usually means poor or no circulation.
water pump?
run engine with full coolant,at operating temp.with rad cap off and look in rad cap hole and see if there is movement of water inside rad.
[rad fan will not come on if water is not circulating through rad water pump?]

Overheating

Generally when the heater isn't heating anything and putting out cold air the heater core is bad. I have never worked on a BMW before and have never heard of a heater core causeing overheating, but because they are linked, it maybe a clog in the core causing poor coolant circulation.
