I replaced mine on the same car.  I borrowed the NAPA timing belt book to get the timing marks.  There are three that need to be aligned.  I would suggest going to NAPA to buy the belt ($25) and while there, ask to see that book so you can write down the timing marks.  The mark on the crank shaft gear is on the inside of the gear, while the cam gear is on the outside of the gear.  Or, you could just buy the book.  It's still a lot cheaper than paying someone to replace the belt.

How to get gears in time after replacing timing belt in 940 volvo 4 cyl if no markings after 1 and only top gear?

you dont will have to be taken to a shop,
there they have the right tools and knollage to handle that,

most engine are interferance engines-
if engine is turned over with belt off the all valves will be bent- resulting in costly repair-
so disconnect the battery before it is towed.

I need to change the timing belt on my 93 940 volvo

This is definitely not ajob for the beginner. The cams will need to be locked down with a special tool. If they move at all, your timing will be way out and you will have some serious trouble on your hands. Either take it to a dealer or a shop that works on Volvo. Most shops will turn down a timing belt job on a Volvo. When replacing the timing belt, you also need to replace the water pump, front crank seal, both cam seals, and im not 100% sure but I think the 940 has a balance shaft belt that will need to be replaced. I may be wrong about the balance shaft belt. The total cost of this job will be from 800.00 to 950.00 depending on the shop

Your public library will have a manual covering your mechanical repair. Moreover, they have the automotive shops online software called AllData. It is the best auto technician database available today. You can print out specific troubleshooting procedures, diagrams, step-by-step istructions, and soforth. The typical person cannot afford to pay for this service, just automotive dealerships, etc... that is why the public library made it available to everyone and for free to view and print out material. This should Fixya! Good Luck!

1994 Volvo 940 Station Wagon timing belt

I hope you've solved the problem by now, but there are alignment marks on the crank shaft (top pulley), idler (lower side), and cam shaft (smaller, bottom pulley) which should be aligned with stationary marks on the timing belt rear cover.

The belt has marks that align with the aforementioned marks (lines). The double marks on the belt align with the camshaft marks and the single marks with the others.

Loosen the tensioner clamp (nut) to allow the spring loaded tensioner to press on the belt and retighten the nut.

Rotate the crank shaft (clockwise, probably two revolutions) and make sure the pulley marks realign to the marks on the cover (they don't have to realign with the marks on the belt).

Rotate the crank shaft a full revolution once the belt is on and check that alignment is preserved.

Periodically loosen and retension the tensioner nut (access through a hole in the cover) to ensure that tension is maintained as the belt relaxes.
