If there is also black smoke coming out the exhaust - and the problem is intermittent - then it's the EGR valve - it sticks open - will need replacing.... Happened to mine this morning and this is what the Jaguar Assistance guy said. Mine is a 2006 2 litre X-type.

Do not replace egr valve until u have tried cleaning it its false economy you can do this with egr cleaner with the part on the car or remove the part and use oven cleaner its a lot cheaper than the egr cleaner

Hi Richard, I'm not an expert on Jags, just a little jealous I don't have one. Looks like a very nice vehicle. Have a close look, inspecting all hoses and vacuum pipes on the intake manifold side of the engine for any damage or loose fitting. The problem seems to be a leakage of air which is raising the idle speed. Regards John

My Jaguar S-Type 4.0 will not start, there is no fuel to the engine

Before you spend any money on the car check the fuel cut off switch. On the s type it should be on the left hand side in the foot well. There is a round hole you can put your finger in. The red button is on top of the switch and should be pressed down. Hope this helps you

Smoke coming from exhaust at higher speeds or when putting foot down, also acceleration jerky like am blipping the accelerator not cruising used to cruise 110 no bother now its taking it to reach 100

If the smoke is blue, it is burning oil. If it is black or dark grey it is running way too rich, like your choke is stuck on. That would also explaing the jerky acceleration and poor response. Your fuel consumption will also skyrocket.
