I have an 83 280zx N/A. It has been sitting up for 15 years. Just got finished with a total engine rebuild. All components are original, however I installed a new coil, headers, and a rebuilt P90 head. I also removed and blocked off EGR valve. The car will start for a second or two, but will not stay running. The coil remains energized with fire to the plugs. I have checked the ECU terminals along with the components and all checks out ok as per the factory service manual. For some reason the injectors only energize one time when the key goes to the start position. With the crank angle sensor telling the ECU when to energize the injectors, is there a specific method to installing the distributor?

Look for a bad ballast resistor that applies power to all the injectors

First, change the fuel filter, and make sure the lines are good. Check the intake manifold bolts for tighness, check all vacuum lines. Best to have it running, wiggle them around and listen for a hiss. Lastly, change idle control sensor, if the other suggestions don't make a difference.

SOURCE: Cranking but doesnt start, or intermittently not starting

My car does the same thing...sometimes it wont start....have to turn the key off then when I crank it again it fires right away. Possible that the in tank fuel pump pressure regulator isn't building to the proper pressure. Nissan did post a recall....under warranty *recall* I might add.... there is an updated pump that will cure the problem but since you most likely are out of warranty it will cast $400+ for the part plus labour if you can't install it yourself. Call nissan to verify if your car is affected by referencing your VIN with them. Dave.

SOURCE: My 1986 Nissan 300zx non-turbo was running fine,

It sounds like the number 2 injector is hung open.

It will dump fuel and cause all sorts off issues with the ECU.

You should ohm that injector and compare it with the others to see if it is wildly different. If so, change it out and retest.

How to get original power back from high mileage SUV

A full service on all areas of the engine and transmission, and then regular services to keep things running right. Fluids and filters in both the engine and transmission need regular change to prevent excessive wear.
Sadly over the years and miles all engines lose power as engine and transmission parts become worn. The only way to fix that is a total rebuild.

Potential electrical cause from engine compartment fire that totalled vehicle

I would start by looking up factory recalls(the National Transportation Safety Board-NTSB,keeps records of these. If you received notice in the mail about ANY recall, and didn't respond or take the truck to a dealer, you're probably out of luck.(this IS a 15 year old truck!)

Engine wont start it backfires through the carb

Make sure the timing is correct. Backfiring is often caused by an engine out of time.
Good idea on the carb rebuild. It may be letting too much gas in.

Blown oil pump 3 cyclinders not firing what else can i I expect in repairing engine

If the oil pump does not work, the entire engine will lock up and be totally useless. You will need to do a complete rebuild of the engine, including main bearings and rod bearings. Sometimes it is easier to buy a rebuilt engine, in the area of $1800.00. Rebuilding will cost 800.00 plus 15 hours lablr.

Hear timing chain rattle when starting.

AND? are you going to change them or run it till it breaks and destroys the engine? You SHOULD have been changing the oil and filter at least 3 times a year, regardless of mileage--once before winter (mid Nov) once early Feb, once mid June.
Winter operation short trips causes lots of fuel dilution in the oil, leading to very rapid wear of timing chain, guides, and other sliding surfaces. 3 changes per year, 12 years, $20/change at 'jiffy lube' = $720, vs 1 change/year costing $240, 'saved' $480--but the worn-out timing chain is only the first of many more badly worn parts that will be showing up now.
