I bought a 92 Chev 2500 4X4 from a guy just recently. He said the tranny wont go into gear. I found the transfer case was in neutral. So i put it in gear and away it goes. But reverse seamed sluggish. Eventually it would engage and be fine. Just had to give it a few seconds. Now it just slips and wont move. All forward gears work. The pervious owner had the tranny rebuilt last summer. Fluid level: I found that the dipstick tube was loose so I tapped it down and fixed. I now have a pretty good leak that apears to be coming from that seal. But the level is ok.

it is a 700R4. Is there a possiblity of a spool in the valve body not moving properly? The oil is now burnt. Im pretty sure I'll need to rebuild or maybe try a junk yard tranny.

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

Since the fluid is burnt is a indication of overheating probably caused by the clutches slipping and the trans left in overdrive in speeds lower than 40 mph. its possible that you have a pressure problem but you need to remove the pan and inspect for any metal or clutch material. but you will probably have to have it rebuilt or find a good used one.

My 2000 Chevy silverado 1500 z71 wont move. used 4wd then tried to put back into 2wd it would shift into any gear. Put back in park it makes a grinding noise

Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

My Grand Vitara can be switched between 2H, 4H, 4L & N. I just don't know what does the "N" mean? And what is the difference between this "N" and the "N of the gearbox?

N on the gearbox/transmission is Neutral for the transmission. Nuetral meaning that the power is not going anywhere so you are not going to move anywhere. The N next to the 2high, 4high, 4low is for the transfer case in nuetral. The transmission sends power through the transfer case and the transfer case sends the power to the rear wheels or front and rear wheels depending if it is in 2hi, 4hi or 4lo. The N setting for the transfer case is used when towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, like people do behind a big RV/motor home.

Transfer case wont work

might want to make shure the shifter linkage arm is in gear. if the linkage is bent at all it will hold the trans inbetween gears not allowing the motor to spin the drive shaft

89 wrangler do I need a new transfer case?

Sounds a lot like a linkage adjustment problem. Check transfer case linkage and adjust as necessary to get proper engagement. If you can't move lever on case, there may be an internal problem, but I've found that a good percentage of problems are with the linkage itself.
Check this out before getting too worried about unit. Also... make sure lube in case is in good condition and properly filled.

My car doesn't change gears, it's runing in hght gear only.

you need to get a new transmission control module, i had the same problem when i bought my 92 from the auction, i wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd, so i found a rebuilt unit on the internet and it corrected the problem, you also might want to remove the excess tranny fluid that every one put's in when they have a tranny problem.

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode

Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
Let me know how it turns out.
