Most common leaks are from the front main pulley seal. Its on the bottom on one side by all the belts. Oil will drip directly below the pulley. Second look at the bottom of the engine wheere the engine bolts to to the transmission. Oil will drip between the crack indicating a rear main seal leak. Finally on top of the engine on the front and the back the valve cover gaskets dry out and leak. The oil will come out above the spark plugs where the bottom of the valve cover touches the top of the head. With a 1997 I am sure all these leaks are very likely. I have a 2001 that has one bad valve cover and a bad rear main seal. In general start at the bottom and work your way up. As soon as you get to a dry clean area you have passed the begining of the leak.
Valve Covers, Head Gaskets, Oil Pan Seal and a number of other spots. You'll need to clean the motor with Gunk Engine cleaner and then look for the largest build ups of oil and crud to get a better idea where it is.

remove the engine strip and rebuild its whats known in the trade as a banger, knackered, thrashed ,had its day.caused by high mileage ,broken piston rings worn valve guides ,valve seats burnt out ,high internal pressure caused by on or all of these things

probably a pan leak ... if the head was leaking like that you would be mixing up a storm....
SOURCE: major oil leak
check front crank seal ive replaced lots of those and you may have to sleeve the crank pully
SOURCE: coolant leak cant find it . it only leaks when
sounds to me like you have a freeze plug leaking if it is coming from where the transmission and the engine mount together behind the bell housing there are 2 plugs that sometimes develop a small leak and eventually gets worse but it could also be a small hose on the top of the engine so check the hoses first
