I would trust them but make sure it is just not in need of some kind of cleaning.
SOURCE: Engine over-revs between 2nd and 3rd gear
they did not install bands right needs to be rebuild bands need to be adjusted
SOURCE: my vw 2000 1.8t passat has trouble idling. Anyone?
It "might" be your throttle position sensor, look for some electronic's going into your or near your throttle body and clean them with disc brake cleaner, something that won't leave a film on it.
This was the problem with my chevy, I know it not the same car but it's worth a try, cheaper that replacing it.
SOURCE: Where is the camshaft position sensor located in a 2001 VW Passat
when you are looking at the engine pull off the plastic cover on top then the front cover that covers you timing belt there is a wire harness tha goes right to it in the left upper coner two ten mil bolts and it comes off careful not to drop bolts down in belt that could be bad. it is that easy
Hello
The engine
and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train
are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM
(Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the
computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some
exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature
sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in
its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems
memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read
you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and
resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A
TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR
HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

this is a 1996 2litre estate
it is now apparently not the hall sensor. engine still wont rev past 1500 rpm. i can hear relays clicking away and dash lights flash on and off.
