How do I replace head and tail lights on a 1998 GMC Jimmy. The manual gives a short instructions it doesn't seem that easy.
Hello,
I have a 1999 GMC Sonoma and have had to replace the lights a few times.
- For the front lights, pop the hood and look to the front.
- Behind each light there are 2 black tabs.
- Pull these up to release the head lights. Be careful. they may fall right off!
- Pull the headlamp assembly out and take note of how the two tabs at the bottom fit into the frame.
- Undo all the bulbs (Some twist while others require you to hold a piece down while you twist to release the bulb) Keep track of which bulbs came out from where
- Once all bulbs are free, replace as needed.
- To reinstall, put the bulbs in the same holes they came out of
- Remember those black tabs you took note of earlier when the assembly came off? It's time to put those tabs back in the slots they came out of.
- Align the black rubber bumpers on the back with their sqaure holes
- Push the Assembly into the frame and have those black tabs ready.
- Once you see the square bumpers on the other side of the frame, slide the black bumpers back on
- Repeat for the other side
- For the tailights, Open your tailgate
- Locate the screws on the sides holding your tail light on (usually one or two screws)
- Undo the screws and take the taillight out
- Undo the bulbs like you did with the headlamps
- replace bulbs as nessecary
- Put bulbs back in
- Reattach tail light (With screws)
A Hayes Service manual also covers these pocedures.
Good Luck!
The
process for replacing tail light bulbs is the same in all models. If
you have a burnt-out tail light bulb, you may need to replace the
brake light, the reverse light or the turn signal. The procedure to
replace each of the bulbs is the same.
Instructions
1.
Open the Hummer's rear swing gate. This will expose the edge of the
vehicle's tail light assembly. You'll see two small Phillips head
screws that hold the tail light assembly in place. Put on your
gloves.
2.
Remove the two screws from the tail light assembly. Pull the tail
light out and inspect the back for two bulbs. The top bulb is the
brake light and turn signal. The bottom bulb is the reverse bulb.
Determine which bulb you need to replace.
4Push
the replacement bulb into its socket firmly. Insert the socket back
into the tail light. Turn it clockwise to secure it in place.
5Place
the tail light into its cradle. Hold it with one hand and replace
the Phillips head screws with the other.
