Four years later, I'm sure you've long since solved the problem. But for other readers, here's a hint. It's important to realize that the clip is not "sprung" onto the axle. It should slide right off. However, with enough gear oil on there, it can stick. So push the axle in or out slightly until the clip is not obstructed by any of the gears. Then use a screwdriver or something similar to rotate the clip so the open part is facing away from you (toward the front of the truck). Now you might be able to get a pick in there to pull the clip out (toward you), but I had better luck temporarily magnetizing a flat blade screwdriver (which I did by attaching a largish magnet to the shaft, up by the handle, and using the screwdriver as a magnet to coax the clip out. If you're still having trouble, make sure the opening in the clip is really rotated away from you. That worked for me on both axles when nothing else would. Good luck!
Sometimes you have to use a prybar to pull the shaft out...you apply enough pressure and it will pull it past the c clip and come out ive had to do it and its about the only way to get the axle out
I fought this for about 4 hours, with just a millimeter short of getting it out, but finally noticed that the ABS ring was hitting the speed sensor. When I took off the single bolt on the back side, the obstruction came out, and let the axle move another 1/2". you don`t say what if anything you have done so far or what the problem is your having.once the wheel and brake drum is off you will have to remove the differential cover(gear oil will come out),you will have to remove the spider gear lock pin from the gear carrier by finding the locking bolt that holds it in place.with this remove DO NOT TURN THE CARRIER GEAR ASSEMBLY or you will be re-installing spider gears and shims back in and must be installed in the proper place.then push the axle into the differential and you may the C clip fall if not remove the C clip to unlock the axle and pull the axle straight out without turning it as you pull.install in reverse order.
Remove the rear cover. Remove the 5/16 (8mm) bolt that holds the center pin and slide the pin out. Push in on the axle (from the outer stud/drum end). When the "C" clips fall out (inside of the rear-Pumpkin) that hold the semi-floating axle in place, slide the axle out. The gears should come right out.
remove the diff cover and drain, there is a bolt on the diff that holds the center pin in place remove it and pin push axle in and remove u clip that holds the axle in place, the remove axle
If you have already removed the outer axle bearing cover in the rear hub, try popping the axle out as some of them have a compression clip holding it in place in the differential. If it doesn't pop loose, you wil have to remove the differential cover and push the axle inward enough to access the retaining clip to remove it. It should slide out fairly easile once the axle is pushed in far enough to clear the retainer clip lock collar.
jack & support vehicle. remove rear axle cover drain fluid, removeleft rear tire drum/rotor brakes, remove bolt in axle housing that holds the 3/4 inch pin in place pull pin , push left axle shaft inwards and remove c clip from inside axle case,slide out axle shaft,remove seal,remove bearing and install in revers
depending on what rearend is in the truck i think the rearend is a dana 44 witch is the better one in my eyes but yes if u drain fluid from pumpkin remove cover and on the ends of the axles there is a c clip to remove caution dont bend or distort clip as it needs to fit on again good luck with ur project and again caution is a must
