I should have been a little more clear. The ventilation control switch that allows you to switch from defrost to head to feet. This is the electronic switch that I was referring to. Check the connection, wireing, and fuse for the climate control first. If these are good, then the switch will need to be replaced.I should have been a little more clear. On a 1996 model you probably have vac actuators that control air flow. Look under the dash and you may be able to see the actuator that controls flow to the defrost and vents. There would be another one for temp control.
Got kids? Years ago, mine loaded the defroster ducts with toys, candy, etc.

I just fixed mine. The lever that opens and closes a door that directs the air flow to the defroster was broken. To be more specific, the plastic lever the actuator attaches to was broken. The actuator and the vacuum system were operating properly. It is simple to see but hard to get to. Remove the glove box and look up and to the left for a silver vacuum controlled actuator. I was able to fabricate another lever and attach it to what was left of the OEM lever.
check or loss of vacuum to mode control switch in dash ac control. these are not blend doors, they are air flow control, a blend door controls the air temperature not where it comes out.
