My '98 626 just started doing this today. The same exact symptoms... Engine light is blinking, severe hesitation and running very rough, and smells hot. It had been hesitating slightly when starting from a stop, but then ran normally until this morning.

I have the same problem!! My check engine light has been on for years. Been in and out of the dealership and have had fuel injectors cleaned, then replaced, the catalytic converter replaced, the EGR valve replaced, O2 sensor..... just learned to live with it. NOW, it is running very rough and instead of the light on steady, it is now FLASHING!!! Where do I start?????

Test the temperature sending unit.  most mazdas built after 1998 have 2 of them.one sending unit is for the the guage in the dash, the other sending unit goes to the vehicle computer, which in turn controls the idle and fuel to air ratio for the vehicle. if it is getting a bad signal or none t all it thinks the car is still very cold and causes it to run ruff and the light stays on  till reset

Engine management light has come on the car is jusddering and the engine smells hot

Check your catalytic convertor. If it starts to clog up your exhaust has a hard time getting out the tailpipe..Your motor will run hot. Your motor will run hotter than normal... And it will make your car shake...Better get it checked. Very bad for your car...Can catch on fire...That catalytic converter will glow red under your car and catch the grass on fire easily

White smoke and stalling in 05 verona

If the exhaust smells like gas it is running rich. If it smells sweet than it os coolant and likley a bad head gasket.

Shaking engine, weak power, blinking check engine light

You have a bad coil pack, they usually crack from age and heat. It's best to replace them all. Check for a VW recall on this item.

Check engine light on in 93 Lexus

The only way to check why the check engine light is on is to have autozone or a mechanic put a scanner on the car and read the engine codes. This will tell you exactly what is wrong. Many part stores will test it for free. Mechanics will charge about $40 But you will definately know exactly what the problem is.

If gauge is fine and car smells hot. It is probably due to plugged exhaust unless you have a wire laying on the exhaust manifold and it's melting.
