Just bought 1979 firebird at auction. Cannot lock ignition with key. Is my problem most likely: a) incorrect ignition key b) faulty ignition lock c) steering column locking mechanism FYI - door locks operate with trunk key, not ignition key. Also, can remove ignition key with engine running.

I turned the ignition on inside the car. The starter will not engage, click, or engage. Is there a security device on the car that prevents this or is this a new starter to be replaced?

Should it still start after bypassing the lock and using the igntion control module with a screwdriver?
Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop !

You either have a bad starter or ignigtion switch. When you turn the key on does everything else come on? I would check the starter first if you have power to everything.
