The 4 hi and 4 lo do not engage anymore. The light on the dash indicates that it is engaging. The drive shaft to the front differential appears to be engaging, but is not turning the front wheels, unless you raise the vehicle with the wheels off of the ground then the front wheels do engage and behave like limited slip type differential when you stop one wheel the other will continue to turn. Any ideas where the problem might be? Thanks

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive will not engage

Test it by setting the rear end up just barely off the ground with some jack stands and setting the hubs to lock (if they are manual). Put it in 4 wheel and try to drive away. If the vehicle does not move then very carefully have a helper check and see if the front drive axles are spinning while it is in 4 wheel and in gear while running.
Spinning axles... hubs are at issue
No spinning axles... Transfer case issue.

Rebuilding any differential requires experience and skill as well as the ability to use dial indicators etc. It is one of those jobs that if you need to ask how, you should not be doing it. Even a small mistake can result in the unit self destructing in a very short time. Positraction diffs are a bit difficult to locate, especially when you need to exactly match the ratio of the one in the front, but far easier to install a drum to drum unit than to rebuild what you have. This is by no means an insult...I know many very good techs that either just do a swap on their own vehicles or send their unit out to someone with a very good reputation that does rebuilds.

Any name brand 90W gear oil will do it. If you're replacing the oil, don't forget the second quart- you'll need it. Of course, you can go to the GM dealer and get their version for 3x the price.

There are 2 models here the push button will flash if the system is not engaging or disengaging properly . If front drive shaft is turning. That is with car raised and supported . if front drive axles do not turn then the axle actuator is not engaging axle shaft passenger side. Remove actuator and manually engage shifting collar with a screwdriver still does not turn then inner axle is twisted.

2003 kia sorento the 4wd lo light randomly comes on and sometimes engages on its own when this happens the transmission wont shift into 4th gear weather it is engaged or not the check engine light appears...
what speed are you driving at, in 4wd ? before it does this ?

4wd auto shift does not engage 4wd.
for 4wl need to be stopped and put in neutral or park it wont actuate while driving [ blinking light indicates failure to engage ] 4wd hi can do while driving --if fails also then check and test for actuator sticking --control module --or transfer case failure

Front axle - front drive shaft Toyota tacoma 1998 4x4
more than like have a broken axle shaft, un hook the rear drive shaft and put it in 4wd if it wont move then you know you got a broken axle shaft or spider gears broke in the pumpkin
