My 97 aurora has trouble starting and while turning over it makes a horrible knocking sound and backfires through the intake but then it starts and runs fine. it smells hot all the time but it stays around 200.im not a mechanic but was wondering if maybe the head gasket could be leaking into the combustion chamber and causing it to hydro lock making it hard to start?

SOURCE: 1998 aurora

I have had this problem with my 98 aurora and have replaced all the same components. Temp gauge routinely shows 200 on highway (Fine) but in the city in stop and go will get to around 245. I installed a switch to manually turn on the cooling fans by connecting the ground to pin 86 in the relay for the fan(s). Otherwise the fans will not turn on to 245. This fix works but would like to know an actual solution.

SOURCE: oil burning when start up.

There are a couple of things that can cause this.
1) Engine oil over filled.
2) PCV valve defective.
3) Engine valve seals damaged or broken.

Is this a high millage car?
Let me know.

What is causing my 1997 Pontiac grand am 4cyl to run horrible

How long since a tune-up? Are there any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free. If you want to check codes, yourself, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader.

Does pop come from the exhaust or intake?

Lift the bonnet and check that the air pipes/hoses are connected, or if the air intake has come off the throttle body, you should be able to see that something is adrift.

Backfire into intake

I'ts quite possible that your distributor is installed one tooth off and is too far advanced, causing the plug to fire before the intake valves are closed completely. Turn it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it again.
