You have to remove the door panel, if you have roll down windows the handle will have to be removed. After panel is removed you have to drill the one rivet that hols the interior handle. slide the handle down and unfasten the rod retaining clip. Please make sure you do not break the clip. Install the new interior door handle, clip and provided fasteners. Try the door before you install the interior door panel, Note the is a good time to lube the window roller and the door mechanism. Make sure to install the water shield to provide the protecting from the elements. Line all the plastic retaining clips and or replace if they are broken. Good Luck.
As far as...?

It helps to have a flat pry tool to get the door panel off but, other than that it's not too hard. Autozone has a tool in the help section that is made to work with those and they have the replacement push clips that always seem to break.
SOURCE: installing driver side interior door handle
pull the inner panel off by first un screwing the two screws located on the handle portion of the panel(they may have plastic hadeaway covers over the heads) then remove the window rolldown handle(if so equipped, manual window)then pull the plastic trangle from the inner of the mirror(this little tri angle keeps the trim down and secure on the door. then pull the palnel directly out there are small clasp pins in behind the panel try not to break these(but they do sell replacements at your local auto store) you will have to get ALL of these free then wiggle the panel up releasing it from the inner shell of the door and and window. you should now have a clean view of the handle. you will now need to droll out the rivit holding the handle to the inner steel of the door. pull the handle forward and it should be released from the inner steel now there clips holding the "rods" to the handles back side, they should have a little piece clipped to the rodto un clip these you need only push them off with your thumb. then replace handle with the new one, and uce a large steel screw to secure the handle when replacing back on door.

Car was broken into w/ a slim jim, must have caught something on the inside because the inside handle works every 1 out of 10 times, needs to be replaced.
My door handle doesn't work at all. There seems to be a screw loose or missing on the inside of the handle housing.
My 2000 GMC 2500 inside door handle will not work. No tension on inside door handle. I need to put the window down to open the door from the outside.
same problem. costs $15 at Advance auto. The ***** is you have to take/pry door pannel off. After you undlip the window crank handle (hard to find but its there). I'm in the middle of it. Seems the new part comes in an assembly with the lock button and all. And I have one rivet to drill out to replace the module. So far not bad. Not done but thought i would help you all out.
My inside door handle doesn't work on my 1998 sierra either. Outside works fine, but inside works about 1/5 times or so if you shove the door open with your shoulder. Seems like it's been slowly slipping inside or something
how do i replace an inside door handle on a 1996 gmc sierra?
