Replacing timing belt; need timing belt markings for 2000 mazda protege

If it has the twin camshafts, then you need to align the bottom crankshaft pulley marking (there's only one marking at top dead centre). Then you'll need to align the two camshaft pulleys. You need to use the first two sets of markings and then double check the markings on the camshafts themselves, within the valve cover area. Always double check the crank shaft sensor is aligned properly on re-assembly as misalignment will result in a non-start and you might doubt your own work. Don't worry about timing belt failure or misalignment on the twin cam engine as this is a "safe-engine" and will not result in any damage.

How to replace a broken timing belt for a 1998 daewoo lanos?? Would there be any head damage?

yes it is quite possible that valves are bent if the cam belt broke or teeth stripped off of old belt, which unfortuneately means removing the cylinder head and getting it repaired (valves replaced and possibly guides) see some of my other posts for cam belt timming marks locations etc...
depending what motor is in your vehicle twin cam or single?

stevenhurc_14.jpg and if its twin cam you usually need cam locking tool for cam gears.

We change the cambelt and something very wrong happened, after putting everything together and starting the car.. it sound really wierd and the car is shaking. Probably the geerwheels are in wrong...

put number one cyl to tdc take out plug put long screwdriver down to check this if you are not sure /check marks on cam pulleys are correct at this point you need to use locking tool to hold pulleys still .if used before you would not have had a problem re fit belt tension turn over 2 times re check marks re check belt tension should be ok now unless valve has got bent moral always lock the camshafs on twin cam engines

Looking for cambelt timing marks/ positions please, Twin cam engine Thanks Kevin

these bend valves if belt breaks while running
Align the timing marks on the camshaft gears to the notches on the camshaft cover, using the intake gear mark for the intake gear and the exhaust gear mark for the exhaust gear.
Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the
notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.

Correct way to align timing marks

hi -- the timing marks on a twin cam are tricky!! heres how- turn the motor over to tdc on the bottom pulley, this will align two marks on the lower cog-----now on the top cog,it has an obvious mark near the teeth-- well disregard this for now!! the cog has a hole in it,in one of the spokes, well this goes at 12 o,clock and lines up with a mark you will see on the housing! now if you are right you will see the mark near the teeth is at around 4,oclock---i just did one and it is right--cheers

1999 Daihatsu Sirion

Your engine is probably an EJ-DE twin cam 12 valve.

Generally Daihatsu belts have marks on them that line up with dimples on the sprockets for the intial phasing. You rotate the engine to top dead centre on No1 piston and install the belt from there. The cams should be not be putting any pressure on the intake and exhaust valves of No1 when phased correctly.
