I have a 2004 XG350. Noticed noise from rear when going over bumps...rattle of sorts. With 75,000 miles I figured shocks struts.Took to Monroe Muffler...they replaced struts shocks (one assembly they say) and bushings in a wish bone looking part the size of a horse shoe.
Nipped me for appox $800 and still makes same noise. They say it's normal? Am I nuts? Should I complain. They say they are lifetime Monroe struts and have tendency to make that noise as they are stiffer.

monroe shock and strut recommends 50k miles for shocks, 80k miles for struts. but they sell struts. if they are visibly leaking, with an oily film building around top of strut, replace them. if the tires are cupping in the center of the tread, replace them. if the car seems to have a bouncy ride and take a while to settle out after a large bump, or if you push down on each corner of the car above the wheel and it bounces easily, they probably need replacing
Check your exhaust and rear suspension for something loose or broken. Problem could be the exhaust, a hanger or cracked pipe. In the suspension it could be shocks, worn bushings, track arms etc. When a problem like this happens you have to get under the car and grab and try to move things checking for loosness. In general try to see what is loose enough that a bump causes it to rattle or bang. Other than inspecting the rear area there is no short cut that can be taken to solve the problem. You don't want to just start replacing parts hoping to fix the problem, that can be expxnsive and unnecessary. Good Luck!!!
I have the same problem with a 2006, V6 AWD. I checked everything this morning and I am pretty sure the rattling is due to the rear engine mount, the one near the firewall. I will take it to a shop this week to get their opinion.
Another source of rattling is the plastic collapsible cover inside the fromt coil spring. They are hard plastic and rattles inside the coil spring.
There is obviously other suspension or exhaust bracket problem that is looose. Check all the bushings in the front end, your steering linkages, recheck the strut bolts, check the entire exhaust system to see if it rattles and look for loose brackets or things maybe hanging down on the car. Also look at motor mounts to see if one is broken. Hope this helps you, Rick
I have experienced the same rattle on a 2002 Bravada since about 50,000 miles. I have had tie rods replaced. Later, I had tires rotated at a tire/maintenance shop and they showed me a slight amount of movement in the ball joints. They wanted to change them. I took it to a dealership. They checked the ball joints and said some play is normal but didn't recommend changing them. I am wondering if the noise is in the struts. It occurs on a slightly rough roads and even backing out of a driveway when the shocks/struts are working rapidly.
