How do you change the filter and fluid on an automatic transmission. 2005 ford escape
I had the defective cooler replaced yesterday and the Ford service manager told me there is no pan or filter in the 2008 escape, only a screen.
You will have to pull the pan off the bottom of the trans, the filter is inside, this is a very messy job and you will most likely get trans fluid everywhere, I would suggest a shop do this unless you have a good floor jack and 4 jack stands, you will also need a large drain pan to catch the fluid. If you do this job do not overfill the trans, get it hot before you top it off with fluid, add 2 quarts right away and then keep adding until it is just below the fluid full line on the dip stick.
PS the other post is a fluid flush and does not include a pan removal or filter change.
Change engine oil and replace oil filter.
Inspect tires for wear and rotate.
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake
lines & hoses, and parking brake system.
Inspect wheel ends for endplay and noise.
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.
Inspect exhaust system and heat shields.
Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension
and, if equipped, half shafts, driveshaft and
U-joints.
Replace engine air filter.
Replace fuel filter..
Replace cabin air filter, if equipped.
Change automatic transmission fluid on vehicles
equipped with the Torqshift and 4R100
transmissions. Replace the remote filter element
on the vehicles equipped with the Torqshift
transmission. Inspect automatic
transmission/transaxle fluid level on all other
vehicles, if equipped with dipstick. Consult your
dealer for your particular requirements.
Change automatic transaxle fluid and filter on all
vehicles equipped with CVT.

I have a 2008 ford escape.
There was red fluid unferneath the car. The ford dealer said oil changed color with heat so they changed the transmission filter. is the filter on the inside or outside?

No it is inside the transmission.
It is a screen filter next to the transmission valve body.
