    actually, ignore the technical diagram, I believe it's for the other engine size...
    if your engine has the pulley circled in dark blue on the first picture, follow that diagram. If not, it will be the second picture i uploaded.

I just replaced my water pump now my water pump is running backwards 96 chevy 2.2 caviler,i think I threaded the belt wrong,it looks like the diagram on the hood.
The waterpump pulley is smooth. It the smooth side of the belt touching the pulley or the grooved side. It should be the smooth side.

for the most part there is a diagram under the hood showing you how the belt goes give this website a try www.webcrawler.com and www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com if all fails stop by your local GM-dealership in the parts department and they be able to print you off the pictures and diagrams you will need wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

Change a serpentine belt on a 1996 chevy cavalier
Diagram should be under the hood
The auto tensioneris down low and dificult to get to.
If it has not been changed in a while you will need a long thin push stick and a serpentine tool.
Push on the belt hard at the auto adjuster and pop the belt off the smooth pully (located top).
hook up the serpentine belt tool and then mount the new belt
