General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.
Valve guides are what the valve stems slide up and down in and mounted on top of the guides are rubber collars (oil stem seals) that should wipe excess oil off the valve stem and prevent it from dribbling down onto the backs of the valves and thence into the engine. The stem valve seals can become hardened with age and this leads to the oil loss. Replacing the seals is perhaps best left to a professionals if you do have the expertise yourself. Try not to overfill the engine with oil as the action of the crank tends to froth it up and could force past the crankcase pressure relief valve into the air inlet plenum: this would also lead to the fouling of the valve stems with oil and hence could lead to mis diagnosis on worn valve stem seals. I would suggest that you drain off any excess oil just to the point that the oil level sits nicely between min and max on the dip stick and then see if the oil burn (smokey exhuast) persists as an issue>
Thanks for the help off both parties really appreciate this. Thanks again

Forgot to mention it uses a lot of oil, had some boroscope inspection done and the lad said it must be the valve stem seals as there was oil beyond, sorry i am no mechanic.
If the wrong type of oil was used or a top up could this cause the symptoms?, it has used a lot of oil as well.
