Hello, something that may be worth checking. This is a very common problem with electronic fuel injection systems.
( MAF ), " mass air flow ", sensor. If this is faulty, some of the symptoms are, a bad idle, loss
of acceleration power, stalling, and even preventing the engine from starting, especially in cold
weather. This can also trigger the "check engine" light.
This sensor tells the on board computer what the fuel/air mix ratio should be. If this sensor is faulty the computer can not determine the proper fuel/air mix, and that may be why you have to give it gas to keep it from stalling.
I hope this helps you.
Check the Idle Air Control and crank sensor. See if either one is going bad. Try cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner or replace it if it's bad. It's usually a process of elimination with cleaning the IAC, MAF or even seafoaming the intake. I do these things first because its cheap. Crank sensors can be effected by temperature and the MAF and IAC will too so too. See what cleaning them will do first.
