Sloppy Steering I just purchased a used 91 Jeep Wrangler. The steering is a little sloppy. Is this common? Is there anything to check to verify that it is not due to excessive wear or a loose or broken part.

I know a lot of people who have jeeps and operate them off road. Usual problems include loose steering from worn or damaged suspension and/or steering components and a bumpy ride due to blown bushings, shocks, or suspension components as well. Yours may not have endured the same abuse but I'd suggest first checking your tire pressure, tread for even wear on all tires and then I'd have an alignment done (if you have damaged components they will tell you before they can align your vehicle) and that will give you an idea of what is wrong with it

Is the ignition has anything to do with the steering column?

is the steering wheel sloppy/wobbly if so then you should have a garage tighten the screws in the column and that should take care of the problem, and if not then I would replace the column.

Steering is very sloppy on my Saturn sl1

sounds like an internal problem in the steering rack, the front end will feel tight on inspection but there will be a lot of play in the steering.

1984 ckevy k20 sloppy / loose steering

sounds like the only thing not checked was the idler arm. Also, have ball joints double checked by a different shop. I had similar issue with 96 Yukon and found ball joints bad on my own. Shop misdiagnosed!

Steering tilt dose not stay tight

if you remove the covers off the column, you will see 2 screws towards the back on the sides of the column, inverted hex head. it is comon for these to work loose and cause the column to become sloppy. remove one at a time and reinstall with locktight medium or blue to hold in place.

Steering wheel turns more than the wheels turn. fight to keep straight

with engine off, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. Check under the hood along the steering shaft for loose u-joints. check the steering box, check joints at either end of drag link(from steering box down to passenter wheel) and tie rod ends. do this with engine off so wheels dont turn. and by the way, jeeps have sloppy steering boxes from the factory, so don't expect excellent, tight steering when you're done. good luck

'89 chevy k1500 sloppy steering wheel (HELP PLEASE)

Everyone always gravitates to the suspension but folks, it's 99% sure that it is the EVO. The EVO is the sensor built into the steering column that senses movement of the steering wheel then controls the power steering pump accordingly. When it goes out (which is all too frequently) you get sloppy and loose steering at lower speeds and it does tighten up a bit on the highway at higher speeds. This is the way it is supposed to work but when it fails it's downright scary trying to keep the truck straight on a narrow two lane road!
