Have a 97 f150 off road. can put in 4x4 but no dash light. keep truck in 4x4 sometimes it comes on an all is good. light go's off no 4x4 this happens dirveing or parked i luv this truck untell i need 4x4 an thats a lot thanks travis ragland lv kansas light no 4x4. light off even in 4x4 no 4x4 pops in pops out.

SOURCE: 1996 Ford F150 4X4 won't shift into low range

I am not sure about Ford, but several of the 4x4 models use a vacuum hose connected to engine vaccum to switch the 4x4 functions. If you have a push button engage system then you may want to check the rubber hoses around the front drive shaft. This only applies for the push button models.

SOURCE: 01 F-350 Diesel battery light keeps coming on.

Check brushes in alternator.

Look under the car the linkage on the trans may have come off.

SOURCE: My cruise control is not working, no lights come

If the CHML ( Center High Mount Stop Lamp ) is working correctly, the next thing to check is the Cruise Control Deactivation switch on the brake pedal.

This is different than the Brake Pedal Position ( BPP ) Switch which is for the stop lamps, and the shift interlock.

The Cruise Control deactivation switch, and the on / set switch are the only external inputs to the Cruise Control, the PCM uses the VSS ( Vehicle Speed Sensor ) to read, set and adjust the speed ( no more vacuum items on the 04+ MY trucks )

there is a cable that comes from your transmission to the back of the instrument cluster, in most cases the cable will break, even if you have a digital dash it still uses the cable.

Your linkage is out of adjustment .it is not coming Al the way out of 4x4 and that is the grinding you are hearing.

I am going to assume that you have auto 4x4, and not manual shift base model.. it just sounds like the servo motor that shifts between 2x4 and 4x4, has gone bad
