Take it back to them, don't let them guess what the problem is, hell a shade tree mechanic can do that, and don't pay them anymore money, fix it right. running a wire means there is a broken, shorted, grounded wire, for $500, I would be pissed.
Thanks! Yes you bet I am. I spoke with them and that is my plan. Problem is, they would work sometimes, sometimes not. I'd be driving along and..poof! no dash lights (therefore no tail lights). First shop claimed they fixed it by cleaning contacts/switch. Had to use emergency flashers that same evening to get it home. $50 shot to he!! on that deal. Decided maybe local GM dealer may be more capable (and yes, more expensive). having doubts about that capable part......
On most cars, when the tail lights quit working the dash lights go out, so we know that it is the same circuit, without a wiring diagram I would be guessing, Not my style, sounds like a wire is bare and shorting out, intermediate problems are tough to find, but they (mechanics) know the circuit, I know it cost money, not to much, you can go to the library or get it off line, a wiring diagram for your car, then you could see what wire does what.
My bill from Don Hall GM SuperCenter says EXACTLY this: "VERIFIED VEH HAS NO PARK LAMPS INCLUDING REAR AND FRONT, DIAG VEH FOUND NEED MORE TIME TO DIAG. CUSTOMER APPROVED FOUR HOURS. USING MULTIPLE SCHEMATICS ATTACHED TO RO FOUND CIRCUIT 1640 IS OPEN BETWEEN UBEC AND IP FUSE BLOCK. CHASED WIRE DOWN TO PASSTHROUGH CONECTOR IS OPEN. CUSTOMER APPROVED ONE ADDITIONAL HOUR REPAIR TO STRING CIRCUIT. RAN NEW WIRE AND RESTRUNG CIRCUIT AND THEN RETESTED VEH NOW OK ALL PARK LAMPS ARE WORKING TO SPECS". end quote. Total due on it was $446.20.
I took car back, asked if they warranty repairs, was told they do IF it is the same problem. I mentioned it has the EXACT same symptoms, that I was unhappy and frustrated, and asked him "wouldn't you be?" Was treated kinda icily after that. I am presuming they will find a 'different problem' this time, and bill me accordingly. I may refuse to pay but probably wont get car back until I do. In that case, my next stop will be the Better Business Bureau I reckon, unless some other entity would be more useful.
As a side note, the car was mildy rear ended a month before this started, while stopped at a traffic light. No damage other than small cracks in bumper. I have insurance claim on that pending, and advised them that I though the current problem could be related, that is, if anyone can ever figure out what problem actually is.
If you can get a cirtified garage to look there, they will probably find the shorted wire, any way that you can remove the tail light ? you might be able to see the problem. It's worth a try.
