I changed the timing belt and cam gear on my 2002 hyundai accent 1.6 liter. The timing marks all line up I think and now with engine running, sounds like valva(s) are hitting the piston. Where is the timing mark for the cams and at what degrees should the crank be at?

I cant find a picture to show you, but if you rotate the engine until #1 is at TDC there should be a timing mark on the crankshaft gear that lines up with a pointer and the cams should have marks that line up also. Most of the time there is a molded line in the cam gear and it lines up with a molded slot in the plate behind the gear at the 12 O'clock position.

if its a single cam the marks should be on the backing plate and if it is twin cam the two marks should face each other on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder and the same goes for single cams line the mark up with the backing plate in the compression stroke of number 1 cylinder.

lots of possibilities. sounds like you may be out 180 degrees.
im thinking crank probably needs cylinder 1 at top dead center and then line the marks up.
best to double check the book.

Make sure the crank pulley is lined up with the top dead center mark. The make sure the crankshaft is lined up with its mark. Its easier if you can line the marks up before you take the old belt and try not to move the crank shaft are cam pulley.

hi from uk to retime cambelt is as follows = the crank cog has a mark which lines up with corresponding mark on front of engine block mark is approx 12-30 o/clock this is TDC No 1 the the cam cog has a small drilled hole in one of the webs just below the cog teeth ? this hole has to be at 12-o/clock position and then using a small mirror if you look through this hole you will see a vertical notch on the front of block this is theTDC mark for cam you then fit belt anticlockwise from c/shaft to cam then round tensioner then release tensionor to tension belt and then lock it up torque both bolts 20 - 27Nm rotate engine manually 4 complete turns clockwise then recheck marks ok /re align ? then re assemble crank pully bolt torque is 140 -150 Nm may i just inform you? that your engine is what is known as interferance that is to say in event of c/belt failure there is more than likely valves to piston contact however this can also occure too if miss timed belt fitted and engine has tried to start ? a compression test on cylinders will confirm if this has happened or not ? hope this helps

hi from uk the cambelt timing marks for accent 1.3/1.5 petrol are as follows= the cam cog has a hole drilling between the outer toothed and the central securing bolt this hole at TDC number 1 cyl is at top central and lines up with a V cut in the cyl head at rear of cog ? the crank cog at TDC number 1 cyl is a pop mark on both the cog and on thefront face of engine quite noticable ! these line up and are at approx 12 -30 pm when viewed fit new belt from crankcog in anticlockwise ie crank then cam then tensioner HOWEVER! if you are considering just replacing belt and tensioner ? be warned this engine is an interferance engine that is to say if belt fails whilst driving there may/will most probably be damage to the valves (bent) due to contact with pistons so would advise caution and suggest compression test all cyls after fitting new belt and tensioner and before rebuild completely once valves have bent they will not contact pistons again but you will have serious missfire/s and probably back fire up inlet manifold coupled with failing to start if engine is high milage ? consider removal of cyl head and check? de coke and replace damaged or best all valves then engine will have improved performance and more milesin future hope this helps

Pull the upper cover off, set the engine at top dead center and see if you cams line up to the marks.

yes those are the marks and it sounds like its not in timing

DID THE BELT BREAK AND THEN IT WAS CHANGED. If so then you may have bent valve. IF NOT then vehicle may be timed wrong. Mark are on the crank and cam timing gears. Cam gear mark at 12 o"clock crank gear mark lined up with TGC mark on block when installing timing belt.
