Question about 1996 BMW 318
With Regard to resetting the Service Indicator on the BMW 318i (E36).
According to Autodata you need to use an "LED Test Light" between ground and pin 7 of the Diagnostic Connector and follow stated procedure's.
But it does'nt state as to what the LED Test Light "is" exactly.
I am an electronics engineer by trade and I know that if you just use a standard Auto Test Indicator Lamp this could potentially place quite a load on the Vehicle's circuitry (especially if pin 7 is simply an ECU driven Line).
Would it be that you are to use a specific BMW Supplied Test light, or is it simply a case of using a standard LED with a resistor in series.
Or is it a case of the BMW's ECU is looking at some sort of Analogue to Digital Conversion's on that data line (Due to the fact that autodata mention's that the LED Test Light has 5 Green LED's, these may / may not light in a sequence, I dont know).
Thankyou for your assistance.
BMW SERVICE RESET Take a small wire, paperclip, or elect wire and bend like a horseshoe. No light or equipment necessary Open the diagnostic data port, the one were the little pacman centre is located. Turn the ignition to position 2, don?t start. Connect pin7 always first and then pin 19. Hold for 4 seconds. Remove wire and settings will be reset. Warning if you hold the wire longer than 10 seconds you may reset inspection intervals 1 and 2. I?ve done this twice and it definitely work on my E36
