Check out the AboutAutomobile.com site for NHTSA complaints. I believe there was a defect in the cylinder heads for this engine. The redesigned heads have a different suffix letter than the stock heads.
For a time, the Manufactuer was paying for the repair.
Sounds like you may have a fouled plug or bad plug wire. It's not firing on that particular cylinder to combust the gas and that may be where you are smelling the exhaust smell.
First check spark plugs/wires/distributor cap (tune up). Also would be good idea to use fuel injector cleane and change fuel filter and O2 sensor.
