Pulling code's from the 4X4 control module would point to a diagnostic procedure . Do you own a professional type scan tool that can read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's in the 4X4 control module ? Autozone , advance etc.... can not read these code's .
Which transfercase does it have ?

The BW 4482 transfer case features a 3-button shift control switch located on the instrument panel
The NVG 246 EAU transfer case features a 4 button shift control switch located on the instrument panel
When the ignition key is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module monitors the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/range position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position will begin flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/range position. The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/range position has been reached, or has been engaged. Without knowing if any of these DTC'S are stored can't suggest any type of repair .

pull 4wd fuse inside fuse panel and atc fuse from underhood fuse center, truck wil go back to 2wd,check control box behind pass.side kick panel ,elect. connector at box,full of corrosion will cause weird 4x4 problems!

one it requires 15 measures of vacuum to actuate anything
two switch is on the transfer case two vacuum ports =2 lines one to and one from check those
three it goes to a unit on the inside of the fender vacuum actuated too which actuates a cable in the front axle ---if it is NOT a VAcUUM problem then the switch on the tranfer case is probably had it
the third port on that switch is a breather port ---should only have 2 vacuum lines
and that SWITCH IS POSITION SENSITIVE as in mark the allignment of the ports --it has to reallign exactly the same way when replaced ---
futhermore : yes the indicator lights come on when it is working properly however
if your in 2 high and the front indicator comes on --well the front axle is actually locked in
that's another common problem ---mine did both at some point --I payed nothing for the truck
otherwise I won't touch GM ---if you ever find a bad trans leak and it's not the pan gasket --then more than likely it's the mate between the trans itself and the bolt up transfer case --np207?
that will run you at least a c-note ---a good trans man can fix your problem ---either mentioned for
usually a c note up to 2 max
But since it's a GM --Learn to fix it yourself ---ASK in HERE or consider selling it off and go foreign
mine is a 84 carberated --but little to nothing changed in the 4x4
mine did albeit the exact same thing one time --wasn't the vacuum --it was the switch on the transfer
case and a frozen shift cable --went ahead and adjusted the linkage and PB blastered it ALL
then the front axle did what I described --
I did it myself --very little problem 5-6max on a 10 wrench scale
