Go to a major auto parts store and ask for them to read out your diagnostic trouble codes. They will usually do that for free. When the check engine light comes on, the car's computer has trouble codes that are waiting in memory to be read by a code reader. Most major auto parts stores have a code reader--ready and waiting to help customers find out what is wrong. Write back here with your codes and we can help you too!

I took my 07 4 Runner to the dealership where I purchased it. As it turns out there was a service recall on the gas cap due to the seal on the cap not sealing properly. Because the seal was beginning to have issues it activated the "slip indicator icon, vsc trac icon and the check engine icon" on the dash. Once they replaced the gas cap, the aforementioned icons turned off. With all the idot lights they put in these vehicles it would have been nice if they had one for the gas cap as well as one for the spare tire. ;-)
