Have 1997 Toyota Camry LE with four cylinder engine. Replacing current engine with a 1998 toyota engine. The 1998 engine has a blue four-pin connector while the 1997 engine does not have this connector. Any idea what this blue four-pin connector on the 1998 engine is for? Thanks.

SOURCE: 1990 toyota camry

Well if it is a 4 cylinder the timing marks would be small hole in camshaft lined up with little dot on head at 12 o'clock position and the crank with the pulley on should line up with 0 on the timing indicator. If it is a 6 cyl then the marks would be- camshafts both with dots up and lined up with indicaters on heads and crank timing mark on 0 with the harmonic balancer installed. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: How to remove ignition cylinder from Toyota Camry 1993

Here are step-by-step instructions for the removal and re-installation of your ignition cylinder on your Toyota. Hope this sheds some light on the subject and solves your problem. Have a great day!

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle.
CAUTIONSome models covered by this guidemay be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in .
  1. Remove the lower steering column cover. Unfasten the ignition switch connector under the instrument panel.
  2. Remove the screws which secure the upper and lower halves of the steering column cover.
  3. Turn the lock cylinder to the ACC position with the ignition key.
  4. Push the lock cylinder stop in with a small, round object (cotter pin, punch, etc.).
On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the steering wheel and combination switch first.
  1. Withdraw the lock cylinder from the lock housing while depressing the stop tab.
  2. To remove the ignition switch, unfasten its securing screws and withdraw the switch from the lock housing.
To install:
  1. Align the locking cam with the hole in the ignition switch and insert the switch into the lock housing.
  2. Secure the switch with its screw(s).
  3. Make sure both the lock cylinder and column lock are in the ACC position. Slide the cylinder into the lock housing until the stop tab engages the hole in the lock.
  4. Install the steering column covers.
  5. Connect the ignition switch wiring.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

SOURCE: replacing non-heated left side mirror (driver's side)

This site will tell you what you need to know. good luck with this.

http://autorepair.about.com/od/otherodddiyjobs/l/aa092504a.htm. In addition to the advice at the above site, I found another trick to removing the trim around the inside door handle. The above article refers to putting a screwdriver UNDER the door handle and pushing down ... to release a "secret latch". That's the first step. The second step (which is not in the article) is to insert the scredriver ABOVE the door handle ... vertically above the spot shown in the article. Then gently press the screwdriver handle down. With the screwdriver acting as a lever, the tip of the screwdriver will push UP on the top part of the trim. That will lift the trim up off a small pin on the handle mechanism. With both the bottom and top of the trim piece now "unlatched", slide the trim toward the back of the car, while you open the inside door handle (as mentioned in the article). The trim will come right off. Be sure to slide the trim toward the back of the car, as you move the trim away from the door panel. (There is a "hooked" piece of plastic on the back of that trim that prevents you from just pulling it out perpendicular to the door panel.) 'Hope these fine points help.

SOURCE: toyota camry 1997 3.0 v-6 code p0446

That code is for the evaporative emmisions system. Here is a link to an open forum you can go to, this will help you understand what it is, and why. The vehicle on the site is a van, but the code, and parts involved are one in the same, so don't worry about the difference in vehicle. The van is a toyota, and this is the information on the p0446 code. Hope this helps you.

Need to replace engine 4 cylinder 1998 toyota camry le What's the best approach to doing it myself? Any repair manual recommendations?

I highly recommend you get at least 1 of 2 choices. The Haynes repair manual is always my first recommendation as it is written more to the Every day person. Another good manual is the Chilton's repair manual. Both are available at your local Auto Parts stores.

Just make sure the timing belt is on properlyy, lining up the cam and crank in proper position to each other. The engine willstart when fully assembled because the electrical has not be altered. If it has a crank position sensor , be sure to put it back on after cleaning it and the connector.
