Outback 1997 was overheating. Temperature needle would move to hot when accelerating and would move back down to half when changing to a lower gear automatic). Mechanic replaced radiator and thermostat and cap. Drove for 300k (100km p/h) and when slowed in traffic gauge want back to 3/4 hot. Again would drop to half when changing down gear. Fan works.

I have heard that the "only real reason" for an overheating Outback from the mid-nineties, other than a broken radiator, is a bad head gasket. Check your coolant overflow tank for oil. Check your oil cap for milky foam (coolant). Good luck.

Sounds like heater problem.not enough flow down to waterpump.
solution cut heater hoses and add to t junctions and join bypass so water flows through heater and through bypass straight to waterpump.

Not enough information on how to do this. Need instructions and if so picture of how it should like when finished.

It is not overheating that is well within the normal range. If the engine gets to hot you will get a check engine warning light.

this sounds like you need to put more coolent in the car if the needles moving back and forth on turns maby its low on fluid. after changing the water pump you could have a air bubble in the system that has worked its way out and now needs more fluid. i hope this helps

If it is not an instrumentation problem then you have to assume the coolant is heat cycling. It could be because the cooling fans are not coming on due to the temperature switch, fans or relay. This would explain why the temperature increases when you are stopped and decreases when you are accelerating and air is moving over the radiator.

No power when accelerating hard

Possibly a plugged catylitic converter. This can cause to much back pressure and that will cause the engine to run poorly under acceleration or loaded conditions.

Overheating

possibly the water pump is not moving the water fast enough at lower rpms when you down shift the rpms are faster and the pump might be pushing the antifreeze around better

1997 Subaru Outback with temperarure problems

check the coolant level - you may have low coolant, causing the sensor to occasionally read an air pocket. If you don't correct this you will burn out your motor.
We had this problem & eventually replaced both the thermostat and radiator cap, being careful to bleed out any air pockets by running the engine form cold with the heater on hot and the radiator cap off - keep watching & topping up the coolant as the enigine heats & the thermostat opens.
Good luck!
