Smell the transmission fluid and see if it smells burnt, If so the tranny may need rebuilding.
Check the level while your there. To prolong life of car don't make it do that.

smells fine, and levels constant... tranny folks swear it's not the transmission

SO maybe engine. If you run a low octane fuel wait until you need fuel and put in 92 octane and see if that improves or eliminates the shake.

1st to second sounds like a forced shift i would check the 1-2 shift solenoid inside the transmission and make sure the speed sensors are all in good working order, clean and apply electro grease to plugs on the transmission , as for the idle problem it could be many things from sensors for the engine to a torque converter lockup solenoid need more info is the check engine light on? you said it shudders is it missing or has a surging idle ( high and low) does it die when it goes low idle or stay running

I have a 95 Mitsubishi Mirage, 1.8, manual transmission, distributor driven. 179k miles. Just started today, shudder after shifting in all gears, levels out after a moment, but seems to shudder stil

I would be checking the engine mounts as the shudder is when the engine is bouncing around under load
it it has a cable operated clutch, the problem could be that as the engine is allowed to move , it is affecting the operation of the pressure plate
it may be true that the distributor may have a problem but in this case , not electrical
distributor problems are limited ,to starting, missing, irregular timing but not what you describe

I am experiancing the same thing with my 02 T&C. When the van is shifting out of OverDrive, it is briefly in nuetral causing the van to seem to jump forward, then it shifts hard into a lower gear. I have found that keeping the van in "3" instead of "D" prevents the hard downshift. I am still trying to determine how to permanetaly fix the problem, but until then I keep it in third unless I hit the highway.

Yes you need to replace the clutch, pressure plate and the throw out bearing and take the fly wheel and have it resurfaced it has burnt spots in it and that is your shudder.

Automatic shudders on some gear changes.

This car has both options of auto transmission plus manual gear **** so the only reason it can shudder when the clutch is not fully released and thus takes some time, that's when it shudders, but on accelerating this will not happen cos the centripetal clutch has enough torque such that the clutch is pressed hard to the cam & therefore no shuddering. On cruising speed the probability of clutch slipping making the car shudder. Thus changing the clutch assembly ought eliminate this problem....sodeep
