The rear seal on the transmission is bad. It is located between the transmission and the transfer case.

My 97 ford exlorer will not go into gear except when I put it in 4 wheel low. transmission has been making a popping noise for a while.

If it won't go into gear, sounds like you've run out of transmission fluid. That grinding sound when you turn the shaft by hand, sounds like you've run it for a bit too long without fluid and wore the gears down. Start it up and check the trans fluid with dipstick. If none on stick, put some in it. You may have already ruined the transmission though. But you never know. Try putting fluid in. Might work.(for a while)

1995 GMC Sonoma will not switch back out of 4 high?

Are the front hubs still locked in?

If you have manually locking front hubs, you probably have a bit of binding in the drive train due to the front wheels being locked to the drive system

After unlocking the hubs, back up about 20 feet, then back forward about 20 feet.....see then if the transfer case can then be disengaged. You MAY need to just yank on the transfer case shifter while the vehicle is moving (slowly of course).....

I had an older ford pickup which did the same thing.....disengaging the hubs and just yanking the shifter had disengaged the 4 wheel drive then I was able to put it back into 2wh high.

2001 gmc sonoma 4 wheel drive slipping the lights on switch work goes into 4x4 but when you accelerate it slips out when you let off it goes back in any ideas?

Hello RD.
Yes, Inside your transfer case there is a clutch that is made up of several plates that are designed to slip when there is a difference in torque between the front and rear.
If improper type of fluid was put in or if the fluid levels were allowed to get low it may have caused damage.
If indeed that improper fluid was put in, drain and refill with the proper fluid.

How do i put fluid in the transmission there is no

On the passenger side of the transmission, there is a fill plug and a drain plug. The fill will be the upper plug and it's the one you use to check to make sure you have the right amount of transmission fluid in your transmission. Manual Transmission, NV3500..........2 liters Manual Transmission, NV1500..........2.7 liters

Undo the plug with a wrench and if the transmission trickles out, your good to go. If there is no fluid trickling out, top it off and place the plug back in and tighten to (Manual Transmission NV1500 Fill Plug 17 ft/lbs) or (Manual Transmission NV3500 Fill Plug 44 ft/lbs)
Thank you for using fixya and be safe. Drain Plug 44 ft/lbs Drain Plug 27 ft/lbs

Transfer Case Oil Change-2003 GMC Sonoma

has your transmission oil been low? only reason i ask that is you said it acted like it was pressurized i have seen the rear seal on the trans go out and overfill the transfer case before. you never want to fill it over the fill hole. so if it held just over a quart that is what it takes. but there is still the question as to where the other fluid came from my guess would be watch for the trans fluid to be low.

If it has auto 4x4. which will have 4 push buttons on the dash it will take auto trac fluid that you will need to get at your local GM dealer. A regular transfer case will take Automatic transmission fluid.

2001 jimmy stuck in 4wd low

Usually when a truck gets stuck in 4 low you need to put it in reverse, start backing up very slowly, put it in neutral (or push in the clutch on manual trans models) and stop the truck with the brakes. this will release the load on the gearing which should allow you to shift out of 4 low.
