Electric steering wheel adjustment not working - Reach/Rake

I've just purchased a 2002 R/Rover Vogue privately. Each time I insert/remove the ignition key noises are heard around the steering column but the wheel doesn't move. Also the adjustment switch doesn't do anything when I move it in/out or up/down. What am I doing wrong? Many thanks.

I also have the same problem was working fine this morning and then pow the steering control and the drivers seat both have stopped working and the fuses are intact, the only thing I have done was to have the Air Susp Inactive warning cleared by the local land rover center

The noise you can hear is the motors still working but the worm nut has broken inside the steering column. The motors still work with the memory system you have but they are not moving the wheel as the worms are still turning but the nut which is attached to the steering column will be floating. Remove covers and check this before you order the new parts as i am informed that a full column is required in order to replace this little part. As it in no way affects the actual steering of the wheels you may be able to repair this without going to major expence. Hope this helps. The same happened with mine but i just wedged the steering in one place and left it. Its been two years now and i can still hear the two motors working every time i put in the ignition key but without the steering wheel adjustment. Ask yourself do you really need it

The key will go in but not turn on my 2002 Chevy Tahoe what do I do?

The ignition lock cylinder in your 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe has to be replaced if the key will insert but not turn the ignition. For older vehicles, this is a relatively common issue that is typically easy to fix. To access the ignition lock cylinder, you must first remove the steering wheel. The cylinder can be removed and the outdated one with a new one once the steering wheel has been relocated out of the way. Before restoring the steering wheel, make sure the replacement cylinder is securely fastened to prevent any additional issues.

I have an S 17 1998 Volvo secondary ignition put in lost key only able to make the door key which was the original ignition key at the Volvo dealer so still don't have key how do i unlock the steering...

You will have to remove the lock and then make sure the steering wheel lock is permanently disengaged before putting the column back together without the lock cylinder. While you are there, you can also remove the ignition switch and reconnect it external to the column so you can use it. Here is the procedure: Except 240 Series
See Figures 1 and 2

WARNING
Before working the steering system, read the SRS service precautions in Chassis Electrical .

  1. Place the front wheels in straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable AND TAPE the cable end.
  3. Remove the air bag assembly.
  4. Remove the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the contact reel assembly.
  6. Remove the combination switch.
  7. Remove the steering column rake adjustment lever using a 0.12 in. (3mm) hex wrench.
  8. Remove the parking plate around the steering tube (4 screws).
  9. Disconnect the ignition lock connector.
  10. Turn the ignition switch to position I .
  11. Take a 0.079 inch (2mm) drift and press down the tumblers in the cylinder.
  12. Remove the lock assembly.
To install:
  1. Install the steering lock assembly.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to position I and press down the tumblers with a suitable drift
  3. Install the lock assembly.
  4. Install the combination switch assembly.
  5. Install the contact reel.
  6. Install the steering wheel.
  7. Install the air bag assembly.

CAUTION
When connecting the battery, make sure that no one is in the vehicle in case of an SRS malfunction causing accidental air bag deployment.

  1. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Check the vehicle operation and SRS system for fault codes.

How do i remove an ignition in a gmc jimmy 2000 without a key?

Hello, Dan. First, disconnect the negative (-)/ground on the battery Dan are you mechanically inclined. If not then don't attempted this job.

You will need to remove all the plastic covers on the steering column. Remove the horn ring.--two screws under the steering wheel. Remove the horn ring and disconnect the horn plug. Remove the steering wheel nut. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.

Remove the turn signal switch that fit around the upper part of the steering column. Then remove the some of the parts that are associated with the steering wheel and/or column.

Now, look at the ignition switch flange, it a big chunk of aluminum. Now look for a large aluminum dowel pin 5/8" in diameter that is driven into the chuck of aluminum but it is parallel to the steering column.

This aluminum dowel pin will have to be drill out before you can get ignition housing off, If there is adjustable steering column lever, remove this also.

Now, once the dowel pin has been removed, looking for a **** in the ignition housing. Take chisel and insert into this ****, drive the chisel into the **** until the ignition housing is loose to be remove by sliding it up over the steering column.

If you buy a new ignition switch, on purchase the switch with keys. Don't buy the hole new ignition housing.. If you do it will get expensive.

In the ignition (old) housing drive out the ignition switch pins that keeps the ignition switch in the housing. Install the new ignition switch re-insert the ignition switch hold pins.

I am fairly sure that Carquest/ NAPA some other larger auto parts will have ignition housing bolt. If they try to sell you a replacement aluminum dowel pin don't buy it. It is almost impossible to install the aluminum dowel pin without the proper tools, so use a bolt to squeeze ignition housing together.

Before putting everything back together. Now, check the new ignition switch to make sure it works. I wish you lot of luck. GB...stewbison

Car key won't turn in ignition 2005 range rover

This also happens when the battery is dead. If you can at least wiggle the steering wheel about 20° in either direction then the steering lock isn't the problem. (Although if you wiggle it too much it might be!)
