The car alarm keeps going off in my 2006 Toyota Prius randomly. I'm not accidentally hitting the panic button. The keys will be sitting on my desk, and the car alarm will go off in the driveway. It's happened 7 times in 3 days. One day it happened while I was in the office for several hours and the alarm went on for so long that the battery died and it had to be jumped. The mechanics said that there was nothing wrong with the battery or the car's computer, but maybe ice had formed in the door lock and caused a short that set off the alarm (severe winter weather conditions here). Any idea what could be causing this?

There are quite a few electrical cables, and your grammar makes it difficult to be clear what you are saying. Could you be more specific? Is there just one cable responsible for the car alarm? If so, is there a way to test this cable specifically? If it goes under the dashboard and the labor is expensive, and it's not the source of the problem, that would be expensive.

Can you say something more that I can take my mechanic?

    I'm trying to understand you...
    "open cab car"

What is a cab car? My car is not a taxicab, just a regular passenger vehicle. Does "cab car" stand for something else? A cable cartridge? I'm sorry to be dense on this, but does the part that you're talking about opening have some other name?

Thank you very much. You provided a lot of additional information that was new to me, that will give me better questions to ask next time I go, and that explained the underlying mechanisms quite clearly. Your recommendations made sense and were well-written and easily understandable despite my lack of knowledge on cars.

Hi,

Something you need to be aware of here is that the factory alarm on your prius only detects doors, this meaning if any of the 4 doors, the hood or the back hatch are opened then it detects this and monitors the door positions, if the alarm is armed and a door is either unlocked or opened unauthorized then it sets this alarm off. You can jump on the roof or ram the car with a dump truck and it will not set the alarm off, the factory alarm does NOT detect impact, it only detects door lock/unlock and door open/close. The only way this alarm will go off (other then if you press the red panic button on the remote) is if a door is either unlocked or opened without the use of a key/remote.
The door entry switches would need to be played around with here and a scan tool with data lists are needed, I have seen some cases where the bolt that holds the door switch to the body is loose and causes this.
The Factory Security system has many customizable features that can be turned on or off or adjusted. The Dealer has the ability to do this for you. I would first have them diagnose why it is setting prematurely. Perhaps the sensitivity is set too high. Have them make the adjustments and see how it goes.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

What is causing the anti-theft alarm light flashing/horn blowing go off?

the remote key would be the easiest (and cheapest) thing to try first but i don't think that a low battery in the fob would activate the alarm randomly , i'd get the OBD codes read as will point to which part of the anti theft/central locking system is causing the issue

Why would the anti-theft alarm go off?

Factory alarms rarely false alert, maybe someone did tamper with the car and ran off before you saw him. The one thing that will often trip alarms is a bad battery in the car, have it tested. Your car may have an add-on alarm in which case anything goofy can happen. It's odd that you had to hit the panic button to shut the alarm off, but if it functions normally otherwise it's unlikely to need a new battery. Is it at all possible that you hit the panic button and that caused the alarm to sound? If it was in your purse or pocket maybe it got pressed in which case it might be normal for you to have to hit panic again to turn it off.

How to disable key fob panic button

The only way I know of to disable this would be to take the remote apart and cover the contacts inside it with tape or something or remove the button. I don't think there is any other way to just turn off that function.
