a whistling noise will be a vacuum leak from some point. The Escapes are known for having vacuum issues in the rear of the engine due heat caused from the motor. The lines dry and crack out.
Remove the vacuum connection to the EGR valve and plug it with a golf tee or similar. If it stops whistling, remove the EGR valve and inspect for wear or seal damage (replace if bad). If you still have noise, suspect a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Hope this helps!
humming or whistling noise..if it is a humming ..try this...going average speed turn your wheels side to side if the humming goes away and comes back then it is a wheel bearing
