Glow plug light indicates if the system is working as designed too. If you have one or two glow plugs out it will start but idle rough at first.

If the glows do not come on, engine will not start or do so after extended cranking and idle rough if temperature below 50F.

If glow lamp not coming on, the 80 amp fuse may be blown. There is a black box on the left inner fender just back from the headlamp. . Under the cover is a thick fuse held by two Phillip head screws.( IIRC.)

If the engine will not crank, try moving the shifter lever back and forward while you turn ignition to crank. If still no crank, it is often the electrical switch under the ignition switch burnt.

Are the other cluster warning lamps, Oil, Battery, Brake, etc coming on when you turn on the ignition.?

Engine shudders when starting

on diesels there are glow plugs in the head which ignite the diesel mist and assist the start process. By keeping the key in start longer it appears that some or all of the glow plugs are not working . Have them checked out as it will eventually damage the starter

All I can think of is:

1. Are the battery terminals clean? (even then it should probably still turn)
2. Are the connections clean/fallen off on the starter motor.

A quick way to test the battery is to switch on hgih beam and try and start the car. If they go very dim then the battery needs charging or one of the cells is gone.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I would recommend disconnecting your glow plug relay if you are going to use starting fluid.
With starting fluid in the engine and the glow plugs turn on it may explode the fluid and do head damage. Starting fluid and any kind of ignition source ( hot glow plug ) is like a bomb.

1997 VW JETTA DIESEL GLOW PLUGS

The glow plug relay is responsible for the duration of glow plugs, this needs to be the starting point. You should get a 12v out for so many seconds when ignition is switched on.
I have taken the cover off relays in the past, cleaned up the internals, sprayed with circuit cleaner and got plenty more years out of them, worth a try.

Wait to start light doesn't come on on my 1999 ram diesel it starsts a little hard on cold mornings

The Cummins does not have glow plugs as mentioned above. It has intake heaters. I have a 99 also and it is a cold natured girl on a cold morning. You should have a block heater to plug in when it is below 40 F. The electric plug should be on the passenger side just inside grill on the hood. You can plug it in all night or a couple of hours before you are ready to go and it should help. Also, since your wait to start light is not working, the intake heaters may not be working. Check them out.

Why the preheating light sometimes is on on cold engine and sometimes off on warm

I'm going to assume you has the diesel version of the Sprinter.

Diesel is just like a good old COX airplane engine.

The engine need to heat up by glow plugs.

You need to turn the key to on position and let the glow plug relay to energize the glow plugs for 5-X numbers of seconds first.......it all depend on the temperature.

The temp. sensor on the engine block will take all the guess work out for you.

When the dash indicator goes out then your are ready to start.

This is the correct procedure to start an diesel engine.
