I have 2003 merc c180 compressor and I replaced the indicator stalk but in doing so I have got the steering angle censor off and I must have turned it round because the esp is on.So I started car and turned steering from lock to lock then turned car off but the dash still shows esp.can you tell me how to reprogram steering angle censor

Check the switch associated with handbrake.
Steering controls - probably you need to replace clock spring in steering column.

Its possible but mercs of old had a faulty indicator stalk i have an old c class and have had 3 over the years common fault its worth looking at the relay first yhe the fault with the stalk hope this helps ivan

Hi , to remove the ESP fault code - start the car & turn your steering wheel from lock to lock. That is from one to the other end.

OK what happens here is over time a tiny deposition of contact material spreads itself within the switch mechanism, this then provides a high resistance tracking which makes the switch " sound" like the flasher relay is operating. It is trying to for sure but through a false circuit.
The solution go to Maplins or a good electronics store and buy a can of contact cleaner spray. Depress the indicator stalk to an " on" position with the ignition off. Spray the contact cleaner right into the switch in the gap that the movement of the stalk creates. Repeat with indicator stalk in other position. Give the switch a good 30 second blast. Leave for 5 minutes and it will be good as gold. Hope that helps.

if you can use a screwdriver and find a repacement indicator stalk assembly you can fix it yourself ! sounds like the plastic flex return has broken off the indicator stalk (common problem ) remove plastic shroud from steering column. 2 screws will hold the indicator stalk in place remoove those & unplug the electrical connection- replace with new indicator stalk

If you have a small odd shaped key on the keyring there is a socket under the steering wheel (in the plastic housing) which mine fitted. By turning the key left or right in the socket it resets the light. I found that the flashing light indicated that the alarm had been triggered at some time when I had been away from the car and had switched itself off after a time. If you have this key you could try that.

If same tires as before & air pressure set correctly, or as usual, a humming when swerving, or turning one way or the other or both, it's usually a pretty good indicator.

I've changed the gearbox fluid and filter and it's OK now.

Yes that is the handle, that is refered to as the stalk or multifunction switch, it is always on the steering column.
