Have the compression checked. Ford escorts are famous for head gasket problems. Check your oil for water and your radiator for oil.
Hi if the timing belt has jumped even 2 teeth, you will have bent valves, what has happened is the pistons have hit the valves and may have bent them stopping them from closing correctly, and hence not giving you compression to start the car, to check to see if the valves are u/s, try and source a pressure tester for the pots, if you do not get any pressure then they are bent and the head with have to come off and the valves will need replacing...hope this helps
Remove timing belt check lower crank sprocket the key way may have stripped also check camshaft and idler bearing timing should never jump especially back
