Reverse engages HARD!!!

Reverse won't engage unless engine revved up several times, then bangs in HARD. Forward gears OK. Fluid doesn't seem burnt. The warmer trans gets the easier it is to get reverse but still engages hard. 3 speed auto and 3.0 engine.

Check for trans codes then I would suggest a fluid change if there are no trouble codes, many times these kinds of problems are caused by a little piece of dirt causing a shift solenoid to stick.

Will not go into reverse.

Hi, have you checked the fluid level on this ? If the fluid smells burnt and is brownish in color most likely the first and reverse clutch has burned out, or the rear reverse band may need adjusted.

If your fluid is a mid to dark brownish color it may need rebuilt and if it smells burnt also.

The reverse and first gear shift work off the same clutch pack inside the transmission and off the reverse band as well. Also if by chance the reverse band spring is broken or the piston push rod has broken will cause loss of reverse too. The forward gears will still work but may get sluggish and take time to engage over time.

Ford e-250 transmission problems

My Econoline 250 with 4.2 lost fluid from hose leak, fixed leak everything was normal for 3 days till I drove it on highway. When it went into overdrive lost forward power. Turned off OD and did ok for a while. Lost forward gears slowly, put in fluid, hard to tell when full. Reverse is fine but have to rev up engine to get forward to engage, then everything is fine at lights and such till take out of drive, then have to rev engine to about 2500rpm to engage drive. Help?

96 ROVER DISC. Has strong reverse - won't engage any forward gears. Fluid seems full even when warm.

Make sure the 4wd shifter is in correct position and hasn't slipped out of correct spot to get you moving forward.

Hi, I have a 1995 volvo 850 with automatic tranny...all forward gears work fine but reverse does not engage unless you stick your foot out the door and roll the car back 2-4 feet then you can feel reverse...

check the transmition fluid level, ( do this with the engine running & the selector in P) if low top up & see if fault cured
also check fluid is no dis-coloured or smells burnt, if so you may have to drain the transmition & change the filter & fluid, a transmition flush would be a good idea.
if the problem remains it is most likely the seals/clutches in the transmition are worn

I have 2005 Chevy Suburban; when you engage the gear in drive the truck would move but won't get out of the first gear. I've checked my transmission fluid and its ok. It also responds to reverse when you...

Common problem probably a 4L60E transmission The low and reverse clutches are the same ones The forward clutches are another set and then there are the 3-4 clutches in another pack. So you probably burn out the forward clutches or could be a stuck valve in the valve body. Time for a transmission specialist.

The error code is basically confirming what you have already found that the transmission is slipping, specifically that when the torque converter locks up on a gear that there is not a significant drop in engine revs i.e. slippage (the lack of engaged drive whilst the transmission is shifting between gears allows the engine to rev a little more freely and the sensor looks for the reduction on engine revving when a gear is engaged). First check the transmission fluid on the transmission dip stick; do this with the car running in 'park'. Firstly is reading 'full'? if not consider topping it up via the transmission dip stick tube. Secondly what does the fluid look like? It should be healthy pink, if brown and burnt smelling this indicates wear and old fluid and this will require a drain and replacement of transmission fluid along with the transmission filter. The torque converter clutch brake band has worn down or it may be that it can be adjusted to compensate for this wear. Adjusting such things should left to the specialists. If the car is still fresh from the dealer I would expect them to repair/fix the fault as a good will measure. This is purely a wear issue and not one due to abusive use of the car.

No Reverse

Check the oil trans filter. Could either be a bad linkage, or a bum synchro. Does it just flat not go into gear, or does it grind when you try to do it? Can you put it in reverse with the engine off?

I dont know exactly witch is you tranny; it sound like you broke the sun shell in the transmission.

For example, this is pretty common with the Chevvorlet 4l60e Transmission, when the sun shell breaks you will lose reverse and fourth gear, the only remedy is to replace the transmssion or have it repaired; the repair will require the transmission be removed and disassembled, you will need to purchase a new sun shell (get a heavy duty replacement) and a papper rubber kit for the repair, just find a good trans guy to provide the labor.

Hope this help.

I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.
