misfire spark plugs coils wires did you wash engine water gets in under the intake to the plugs first if with a scanner check codes p0300 change plugs p0301 or 2 or 3 or 4 its one of the cylinders i would try just changing all the plugs first and start from there
First you need to retrieve codes from the Engine control module. You can buy a cheap code retriever at harbor freight and get the codes. After you get the codes, if it is P0301 it means cyl #1, P0302 = cyl #2, P0303=cyl 3 and P0304= cyl 4. For ex: if you got P0301 you should remove the ignition coil #1(near the front of the engine, where the pulley is) and change its position with the coil # 2. Also remove the spark plug #1 and change the position with the spark plug #4. Clear the codes and start and run the engine until the check engine light goes on. Check for codes and see if the code change for a different code. If it change the position observe which one is the change. If is P0304 you have a bad spark plug, If it is P0302 you have a bad coil. If it repeat P0301, you have either a low compression, bad injector/connector, bad intake gasket them you should continue your diagnostic. I hope this help you. Junior.
Go to Autozone and test for any system codes first. Change Coil Packs (major problem) unplug your battery. Spark Plugs and spark plug wires. Change the add 1/2 bottle of Seafoam to gasoline. Or Chevron Tekron Injector cleaner $39.00 bottle is better Safe for all Sensors. This is a major tune up not a band aide. Your car will run smooth as new. Fill your gas tank before adding. The Sea foam is better. Add this straight to your Intake while running. You should see a large amount of white smoke from the exhaust. spray and REV/Hold down the accelerator. This is an awesome Intake Cleaner which controls your acceleration. Sometimes this kills the spark plugs so use cheap walmart brand clean, then change again if after you clear the bottle, run the car for until there is no more smoke. If it is still running rough, I usually change the spark plugs again, and walah/PRESTO!. You have a factory clean system. This stuff is magic.
How old are the spark plugs and wires. GM vehicles are great runners until something goes wrong with the typical spark or fuel delivery issues. Wires or fouled plugs may not set off the computer, it will just run crappy.
Random multiple cylinder misfire indicates a weak spark or at least that is the most common cause - most misfires are ignition related and as that is the easiest to service and test it is best to eliminate the possibility first.
The coil resistance should be checked against specifications and if found ok test the spark power is sufficient. If the spark is insufficient it is possible it is weak because the ECU is not working correctly or because the voltage supply to the coils is too low. Check the spark plugs for fouling and wear, especially baked on town running deposits.
Clear the code(s) before every test.
I have an 2002 Escape with a 3.0L engine.
First you need to get a OBD2 scan for the check engine code.
I suspect the code will tell you that one of the cylinders is misfiring.
If you also have the V6 engine, the most common cause of misfire is one of the Coil-Over-Plugs (COP). Each cylinder has a COP on the spark plug.
On the V6, you need to remove the upper intake manifold to get the back 3 COPs.
If you have a V6, and you have cylinder misfire, I recommend replacing all the plugs and coils.
I have had 2 COPs go bad. The second time, I replaced all of them.
Removing the intake is fairly easy if you have some repair experience. You need to get an intake gasket set for about $10-15.
The coils run +$75 each for OEM. I went with Ebay aftermarket; 6 coils for about $80.
I recommend replacing the plugs with the exact same brand as original. There is no miracle plug that will give you better performance or mileage. Stay original.
I had the same problem and replaced the spark plugs, and also the tubes that run from the coils to the spark plugs. there is a spring inside the tubes that was brooken and that fixed the problem.
