I am having a problem with my car regarding the air conditioner. When I turn the air on the car begins to make a horrible screeching noise. It becomes louder as I accelerate. After I have been running the vehicle for a while it stops. It does blow very cold air so it is still operating. Its just embarrassing to turn it on. My husband replaced the belts thinking it was that problem. Is this a common problem? Thanks.
Sounds to me like you need the alternator idler pulley. Look at it and see if it has a big washer covering portion of the pulley, or if the washer is inside the pulley. If its inside, than you have an old pulley. Replace it with the one, that has the big washer in the middle of pulley. You do have another idler for the A/C compressor. Those I have seen fail also. But 80% of the time its the alternator idler pulley.
Change the pulley and noise gone!
Maybe you should try to check the air conditioner compressor and see if the bearing where the pulley to the belt turn is bad, sometimes that bearing goes bad and everytime you accelerate you hear it louder because every pulley is working together with the car's engine

I have 2001 Altima with the same problem, noise is coming when A/C is on, and it becomes louder as I accelerate. The noise stops for a while and than appears again. I changed a/c belt , checked everything under the hood, noise is not from under the hood The noise is coming from under glove box, so i checked a blower motor - it doesn't give a noise. I think its an evaporator or something in that area.
