Apply brake and accelerate engine while vehicle is standing still, you need to apply brake hard, DO NOT do this for a period of more than 1 minute or you will be putting alot of stress on your transmission. you will be trying to set off the "check engine" warning lamp or the "service engine soon" warning lamp, and get a misfire failure code, after code sets on your vehicle computer, get it scanned it will tell you which engine cylinder is misfiring ie "P0301= cylinder #1 misfire" then check out spark plug, spark plug wire and ignition coil. one of them is probably causing this.

I should of also said that it's a standard transmission.

o.k. so get on road and go up to 20 mph, then shift into high gear and accelerate on pedal, hard to make it misfire. don't worry bout transmission. clutch should hold up easily.then scan test.

It started to backfire quite a bit. It did not show any error codes on the dash.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2011

get it scanned now to retrieve any codes, sounds like you have a secondary ignition problem, i.e. spark plug, ignition coil, spark plug wire. ignition coil packs have been a common failure on this engines. check codes first, and go from there. good luck, wish you well. i know you can find it.

Well that did it. I went out and purchased new plugs and that took care of the problem. I sure appreciate the help. Hasn't ran like that for quite a while. Plan on changing plug wires also since they look original. Thanks again.

don't go cheap on wires, make sure you hear the click when putting em on plugs and coils. also add a fuel injector cleaner to your fuel tank use "CHEVRON" fuel injection system cleaner (black plastic bottle) they have a patent on formula. i got this from a G.M. ENGINEER.

SOURCE: MISSING DURING ACCELERATION

This could be many things like socket said also possibly fuel pump issues or a bad pcv valve. Im leaning towards a fuel pump problem

1991 toyota previa 132,000 ml. I have a problem with acceleration. The engine sputters when accelerating. I have completed a tune-up, and there were carbon deposits on the spark plugs.

I had a power problem, when cold idled just fine, when warm it would miss at idle, spudder on acceleration and sound just fine at higher rpm. found number three spark plug wire had burned through lower boot. Spark was firing to head at low idle. same wire burn twice with about 40000 mile between.
