I am purchasing a used 1998 subaru impreza coupe with a manual 5spd transmission with 150,000 miles. Are there any common problems with that year and that mileage that I should check for before purchasing the vehicle so that I dont have to make any expensive repairs in the near future.

SOURCE: subaru impreza automatic transmission won t shift

Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Help removing interior door panel/ 1996 Subaru Impreza Coupe

First you remove the small triangular shaped plastic piece that is on top of the door panel by the front of the door by the mirror by simply prying it of. Next behind the door open lever if there is a small plastic cover remove it under it will be a screw. Next your window switch will just pry up and out, disconnect the wiring, under the switch there will be a screw ataching the door panel to the door. Next on the face of the door panel if there is a small cover about the size of a nickle but elongated, remove the cover and remove the screw below it. Next pry the door panel from the bottom untill it "pops" out and grab it and pop the rest of the panel out, lift the panel up off of the window ledge.

When does a 1998 Subaru Impreza with 60,000 miles need new timing belt?

Non-California vehicles: replace every 60,000 miles

Otherwise, it is just to be inspected at 60,000 and then again at 90-95,000 miles.

I have a 1998 Subaru impreza outback with 54K miles. When should I change the timing belt and all associated parts (water pump etc.)?

Every 60,000 to 80,000 miles depending on your manufacturers reccomendations. The water pump is not normally changed untill you have a problem with it.

1995 subaru impreza looking to purchase, how reliabl is the transmission it's a manual?

very. the manual box is quite tough, as are most subaru parts. I have had a lot of imprezas and a legacy and they are quite bullet-proof except for a fuel starvation fault in hard-tuned turbo models but that due to fuel rail design and too much boost ;)

Subaru impreza 1998 auto trans shifts slugishly and is reluctant to down shift when going up hill the problem is more dramatic on the highway as opposed to around town

Now this is one thing i would do is change the transmission fluid or just have the whole system flushed. It should be changed every 65k-70k miles or sooner depending how the car is driven, this is a rule of thumb for all makes not just Subaru if you have any other cars at the same time. This should cure the problem that your having. I had the transmission completely die on me in my 74 Chevy i did just that and i havnt had a issue since and that was a wile ago.
