I bought a 1988 dodge dakota truck, did a tune up, oil, antifreeze. The truck ran fine for awhile, now it won't start. All the wires are connected to the distributor and spark plugs. I just got this truck, the guy also mentioned someone had recently replaced the fuel filter, and that some wires above the fuel tank were repaired. I couldn't see any visual breaks in the wires, but may be a fuel problem. I am very frustrated at this point, please help

go to Didgeforums.com.

I had a similiar problem, found the solution there. It was the wiring harnes on the drivers side under the hood, just above the wheel well. there are a cluster of wires in a bundle. I unpacked the bundle carefuly and sure enough the were two or three wires all coroded, had wite powder from corosion. repaired the connections and bingo. I posted details at dodgeforums.com. browse around there. I posted pictures as well. this is a common problem.

SOURCE: 01 gmc truck 1500 2wd oder of antifreeze inside cab

the small radiator just inside the cab, where the hoses go to the heater is leaking. You may try using stop leak (many don't recommend this) or take off the heater radiator. it will probably get worse when you turn on the heater and fog up the windshield if not fixed. hope this helps.

YOU'RE GONNA HATE THIS BUT IT DOES SOUND LIKE A FUEL ISSUE. HOWEVER HERE'S THE CATCH.....THE FURL FILTER IS IN THE GAS TANK CONNECTED TO THE FUEL PUMP. YOU HAVE TO DROP THE TANK OR TAKE THE BED OFF TO GET TO IT. AND YOU CAN ONLY GET THE NEW FILTER AT THE DEALER. THE LOCAL PARTS STORE DOESN'T CARRY THESE. BUT I'M NOT SURE ABOUT NAPA, THEY MIGHT. YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO CHECK FOR A VAC. LEAK AROUND THE THROTTLE BODY. LASTLY WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DID ANYTHING TO THE TRANS.? MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO THAT.

SOURCE: 99 Dodge Durango Dies When Slowing

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: My 92 Dodge Dakota keeps dying while in motion

I had same problem with 99 Durango.
It was an easy and cheap fix -- I went to AutoBeef.com and learned common problem with 98 & 99 Durango -- sounds exactly like your problem. I was encouraged to replace the PCM "Brain" and was advised of an online Refurbished PCM dealer located in Florida. You can google as I forgot the name. I called them and they confirmed an easy fix w only 3 screws to change out the brain. The cost was < $300.00 and my son & bro changed it out. Runs great ever since -- I was so grateful for AutoBeef.com for delievering this information to me. My car would die on me without warning -- totally unreliable and dealer and mechanics had no clue. Your problem sounds like mine -- call the PCM reburbishing company and see what they think.

Replace your hose going from intake to brake booster ( vacuum leak) check all other hoses also. Clean the throttle body. And a tune up probably wont hurt either.

1997 dodge dakota has a weak start then dies when gas is applied

if your plugs were changed and it misfires make sure the wires where put on write then make sure that wires are good and pun some Chevron fuel injector cleaner thru it place 2 wire with another good wire if the misfire goes to that cylinder then you are dealing with a wire problem let me know

My 1988 Dodge Dakota starts when cool, and runs good at all times. However, after the vehicle has ran for 20 min or more, it will turn but will not start again until it cools off.

sounds like your ignition coil is getting hot. it is either a bad connectioin with the wiring leading to your distributor or bad connections with your batt terminals. also you might want to check all your fuses and make are all correct size
