I have a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo, 4-wheel drive, 3.2L V-6. A new clutch was installed in 2006. A few months ago, my wife was driving it up up a steep grade. There was one short screeching noise from somewhere around the transmission / clutch area and then the car would not go into gear. So we coasted to the side of the road where we noticed some smoke with a sweet antifreeze smell. So now, if you hold down the clutch pedal, you can start the car. But you can't shift it into gear. And if you release the clutch pedal, it dies. What I can't figure out is what exactly is wrong with the car. What happened? And how can I fix it? Is it the transmission? The shifter? The clutch? What?

Simple the clutch pedal acuator system failed
as ALL do this old.

if cable clutch cable snapped, easy no? 2 man test, oops acutator dead
if hydra. clutch actuator , master and slave, its dead. 2 man test
one pushes clutch pedal , man 2 see slave dead.
bingo bad MC/SLAVE, replace both at once, and enjoy longer service. less labor.
easy no?

It sounds to me as you have a leaking clutch cylinder? Have you checked under the bonnet to see where the leak has come from? If you find it too difficult above the vehicle, then make sure that you are safe getting under the vehicle to check where the leak is coming from. Your description points to clutch issue if it will not go into gear OR POSSIBLY linkage issue, so make sure that there are no fluid cylinders other than the master cylinder with leaks. It may be you do not have to replace the cylinder, but purchase a kit of seals to do the job. You then detach the faulty cylinder and check it's seals if you feel competent. Check the cylinder is not pitted inside as this would allow fluid to bypass the seal. Once this cylinder is repaired or replaced you will need to top it up with CLUTCH AND BRAKE fluid. UNLESS your model has specific manufacturers instructions as to what to use. Check with your local automotive store. If you can,
have the vehicle raised at the front if you are doing the work on stands or ramps. BE SAFE. If you get it done, then it will need fluid put back in and then someone will need to sit inside the vehicle and pump the clutch pedal until they feel resistance has increased. DO NOT over fill. Keep topping up as the level drops. I leave my own vehicle to stand to allow any air bubbles to rise to the top of the cylinder. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: manual clutch

Sounds like the wrong pressure plate. I got a kit from Autozone and it was the wrong pressure plate. My old one was obviously thicker. With the new pressure plate, the shift fork was almost at full travel before any resistance. That's no good. I had to pull the transmisssion again and use my old pressure plate. Luckily, it was in good condition. Then, the clutch slack was easily adjusted and works great.

Your shifter cable has either come loose from the cam positioner on the tranny or the cable is rotted somewhere inside its housing.

SOURCE: 1995-96 Isuzu Rodeo transmission swapable?

No they are not compatible. They changed the crank between 95 and 96. I have a 96 that needed an engine swap and the dealer that I bought it from was paying for the engine, he bought a 95 engine and after a month of trying the mechanic said no way no how, the crank between the two is different.

Is a 2002 isuzu rodeo front wheel drive ? And do you have to remove the axle to replace a transmission

There are no front wheel drive rodeos but there are 4 wheel drive and all wheel drive. If it is not 4 or all wheel drive then there is no front shafts. You will need to remove the rear drive shaft though to remove the transmission. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Gas tank/ gas gauge

What does your manual say that it is? Always check in your manual and you will have plenty of information to help solve your questions. However, I want to venture a guess about your gas gauge. You may have a computer mis-read and the new tank install is not interfacing with your computer.
