Probably. There may be a solenoid not working which is keeping the transmission from engaging the forward gear train but for it not to work at all is unusual.
No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result. Thank you for using fixya, and good luck.
What you are thinking about doing is all "custom mods"...Nothing is impossible but what you are asking will take a huge pile of money and a lot of expertise. Corvette differentials are completely different and require extensive modifications to install, with very little benefit other than being "different" and a good conversation piece. Likely you would be better served by installing a diff made by Strange Engineering which would be far stronger. In a Camaro, you would also benefit more by using a good 350 engine (performance crate version) with a 700r4 transmission behind it (more reliable and less aggravation) The biggest problem would be getting a wiring harness and ignition system to operate the whole thing, but being a Chevy, there are a great number of suppliers of aftermarket harnesses to work with. That said, it will still take a heap of $ and experience to get it all together!!! Good luck though!!!
Check you transmission fluid level and if it's not your transmission, I'm thinking that your brake shoe lineing in the rear brakes may have separated and is jamming up aginst the drums when your trying to back up. Sorry can't halp you with any more, good luck and start with that and hope it help's.
